09506000134352GTIN is the identifier of the trade item, not of the individual unit. In the marking structure it usually follows AI 01.
When a symbol is damaged, GTIN is extremely useful because it is a known part of the message. That reduces the search space for the recovery algorithm.
It also helps identify the product group and the kind of serial or security structure that should be expected.
GTIN can be obtained from the product’s linear barcode, from the printed digits under it or directly from your accounting system.
That is why we ask for the barcode photo together with the damaged symbol whenever possible.
GTIN does not replace the serial number, but it often turns a hard recovery problem into a much easier one.
